North West Music Academy, Barrow-in-Furness
The first of our New Northern spotlight features highlights the work of North West Music Academy and promoter Lesley Faulkner.
North West Music Academy (NWMA) is a music charity based in a grade 2 listed heritage building in the heart of Barrow-in-Furness. Their mission is to bring high-quality music education, activities and performance to the local community.
Lesley applied to New Northern to help NWMA establish a regular platform for jazz including the launch of a micro-festival which she plans to make an annual event.
“North West Music Academy is delighted to have received New Northern Bursary support for our first ever Jazz and Blues Weekender in Barrow. We are looking forward to welcoming two bands from the North of England to our fledgling venue across the weekend of 21-23rd February. The exciting Leeds based Vipertime ' ... agro-jazz drawing from the depths of spiritual jazz and post punk...' and versatile Cumbrian jazz collective Oppgard who mix their original music with jazz standards. We are aiming for the weekend to help revive what was once a very strong Jazz and Blues scene in Barrow. All welcome!” Lesley Faulkner
