Artists for the 2022-2023 period were chosen through an open application process and selected by UK-wide industry experts and tastemakers. These exceptional artists represent the truly rich, eclectic and diverse nature of genre-blending jazz in the north.

Hannabiell & the Midnight Blue Collective

Led by trombonist Hannabiell Sanders the collective fuse powerful and upbeat Latin & African percussion, brass, vocal chants, Blues, Jazz, Afro-beat, Funk, and Reggae to create a unique sound and an invigorating party atmosphere that will get you up on your feet.

TC & The Groove Family

TC & The Groove Family, are a 10-piece collective whose music celebrates the coming together of cultures and the unity that music provides.

Driven by drummer Tim Cook, their live shows are powerful and dynamic, exploring grooves and genres from the UK and worldwide, including afrobeat, breakbeat, jungle, jazz and highlife. Forming at Leeds College of Music in 2018, these young musicians represent multicultural Britain in today’s generation and are proud to play their part in the new wave of UK Jazz. They create innovative music combining their love for global styles fusing Highlife-horn riffs, Jungle breakbeats, spiritual solos and deep basslines.

Ni Maxine

Neo-Jazz Singer-Songwriter; a black woman navigating the modern world and exploring themes of home, identity, self-esteem and belonging.

Born in North London and raised in Bristol, Ni Maxine moved to Liverpool in 2019 and has since discovered just how deep her connection to the city runs, with both of her parents having spent much of their youth in the Merseyside area, and with the docks playing a huge part in the reason why she came to be…

Black Music was all she knew growing up: She recalls her father’s love of jazz, her mother’s love of funk and rare groove, as well as her Sunday mornings in a gospel church, where she first learned to sing. With Radio 1 Introducing ‘Tip of The Week’ and Jazz FM radio-play under her belt, a sold-out debut headline show in Liverpool and the iconic sell-out ‘Ode To Billie Holiday’ show at The Liverpool Philharmonic this year on her CV, Ni Maxine is one to watch!

Marco Woolf

A storyteller who builds narrative around his music, while his songs are atmospheric with lyrics full of imagery.

Heavily influenced by a blend of jazz and folk by artists such as John Martyn and Nick Drake, Marco Woolf writes delicate, introspective songs. Expect to be taken on a journey where each instrument is its own character with solos more akin to dramatic monologues.

Yaatri is an award winning five-piece art-rock/jazz crossover group formed in Leeds in 2018. Influenced by the momentum of the rhythms of India, immersive timbres of electronic music, and energy of rock and roll, their music has a strong sense of purpose and journey.

Power Out is a continuous set of live drums, electronics, and lights to create a whirling atmosphere of beats. It’s a story of pumping dance music contrasted with improvised live drumming, that blows apart expectations of what solo drumming can be.

Power Out has performed at festivals such as Manchester Jazz Festival, No Bounds Festival, and London Jazz Festival.
